I didn’t set out to become a marketing professional; I was just a business owner trying to stay afloat.
Years ago, I started with a tile setting business that sort of got by, but I didn't want to just get by. I partnered up with a friend and we opened up a small home remodeling company. Things started looking better—until the early 2000s housing market crash hit us. Practically overnight, larger companies began undercutting the market, offering jobs at cost just to survive. Small businesses like ours were squeezed out, and the company we’d worked so hard to build fell apart.
That loss taught me a tough lesson: survival in business doesn’t come from hard work alone. I realized I needed to understand what made some businesses thrive when others struggled. So, I dove into learning everything I could about marketing, growth strategies, and ways to optimize every single part of a business. I started specializing in growth hacking and conversion rate optimization (CRO), uncovering techniques that could change a business’s trajectory.
But life has a way of testing you. Around the same time, I went through a personal crisis, I won’t bore you with the details, life ‘happens’ to everyone. But it was a heavy blow, and for a while, I let everything slip away.
Still, the fact of the matter is, you can’t let everything slip away forever. In the time that followed, I channeled those setbacks into countless hours of mastering strategies used by the biggest players, adapting them to help smaller businesses thrive. Now, I’ve returned with a renewed sense of purpose. I know what it’s like to build something from the ground up, to face setbacks, and to find the resilience to start again.
